LOCKED - Mexico City Shops in Mexico City are locked down so heavily that the vast rows of padlocks become a striking visual detail in the early morning and evening hours when the stores are closed. In addition to roll-down walls of metal with heavily padlocked doors, many retailers use an additional succession of locks to secure their metal roll-down doors to anchors that are lodged into gouged-out sidewalks. These photos were taken in 2007. |
CROPPED AND FENCE-EATING TREES - Chicago
While human life carries on around them, trees in urban areas quietly but forcefully grow in unexpected ways that property owners may not notice until they have become serve. We have seen many examples of trees that have "eaten" fences - growing over the metal, absorbing it and thriving for years undeterred years undeterred by human interventions. More attentive and less tolerant property owners will notice this behaviour and aggressively crop the trees - further calling attention to what these plants were doing when no one was looking. These photos were taken between 2005-2007 |
In any densely populated city people compete for access to space for housing. recreation, work and parking. Parking - already scarce in many neighbourhoods in normal weather - becomes a great point of contestation after a heavy snowstorm. After a person spends an hour digging his car out from under the snow, he often feels entitled to that space and lays claim with a makeshift parking saver made from whatever materials are on hand.
