John Baldassari is a famous artist who is mainly known for destroying all of his art in 1970 that he had made from 1953 to 1966 by burning them and making them into a 'cremation project'. Here are some of my favourite pieces from John. I really like how simple it is to put dots covering someone's face but is so impactful it because it can be interpreted in many different ways and can completely change the feeling and message behind the image. He used brightly coloured dots as he thought it resembled the brightly coloured price tags seen in shops and so on and one of his 'tips for selling art' is ' generally speaking, paintings with light colours sell more quickly than paintings with dark colours' so were left to think if this was one of the reasons why he did in-fact use colourful dots.

Then we stuck all of our photos on the wall and had to come up with a sequence of at-least 20images that made sense together. So we had to all join in and get rid of ones we didn't think fit the sequence so that meant getting rid of your peers work and them getting rid of yours which got a bit heated and not everyone was 100% happy with the result but we settled on that. |
This is probably my favourite outcome we've done so far. I really like the way the hand looks quite alien like and how theres only shadows at the length of the arm and you cant see the models body or face or anything in the shadow. I personally do really love the colour it turned out by turning the hue down.

This is my first try with with movie stills from the 1950s that i found on google. I printed them out then folded them onto each other to make a more abstract portrait. I quite like how it turned out. Im going to do these again with more found images and also with my own images and find and put more time into what photos go with each other.

Ying Ang is a photographer and director, one of her first books was called the 'Gold Coast'. The book is full of light, aesthetically pleasing photos, however Angs images have a darker underbelly to what first meets the eye. This is a recurring theme in all of her books. Similar with 'The Quickening'. A book about ying being pregnant and all the images being very delicate, however its really about how lonely pregnancy is and giving birth. The images below are all from the quickening, the whole book had pages that are in a French fold or printed with vibrant colours and quotes. I see these photos as 'quiet photos', images that are subtle but powerful. I'm going to really enjoy taking these photos and playing around with different ways of printing them and presenting it in an abstract way.

So with these images i wanted to play around with light and how light effects an image and make the image look quite unique. I took a few pictures of my stain glass lamp up close and then i took it as a live photo on my phone and u can change ur live photo into a long exposure and thats what the first two images are, just a long exposure of the rest of the images and i really llike how it came out. Im going to play around with light and long exposure now and then close to the end of the project im going to refine all my images and make it into a book which will be inspired by Ying Ang and Terri Weifenbach and Rinko Kawauchi.

Ive been experimenting with overlapping some of my images. I used two of the images above, one that was blurred and then another that is clear. The blurred image was lighter and i think overlapping them with this was a lot nicer as you could actually see the different images and the details of them, whereas with the image that was in focus it was quite dark and didn't really work with overlapping on images too well. The images here in the gallery to the right are all of my failed experiments and they're mainly with the focused image. The photos bellow are the experiments that i quite like. You can see the different details of the image even when it overlaps the blurred light image. I don't necessarily love how they turned out, i think they're a bit dark. So im going to retake images where the light is abstracted and take images with the intent to overlap them onto others so im not going to make the exposure too dark.

I vaguely agree with this article as I do relate to struggling with starting off my project and sticking to one thing as i do tend to get really bored really easily if i'm not fully committed to a project. So i started off with John Stekazer and then got bored and changed my project to Ying Ang. I get easily overwhelmed when trying to take images as i have so many ideas and struggle to take photos that portray my ideas. The article talks about how difficult and easy photography is and how the thought of photography is quite easy in the fact that it just taking images of what you see in front of you but when it actually comes down to taking pictures its particularly difficult as theres almost too much to photograph. |
